Stewardship Beyond the Home | From the Ground Up

At The Ramble Biltmore Forest, stewardship begins long before a home takes shape. It is present in the preserved forest canopy, the quiet rhythm of the land, and the shared understanding that this place is meant to be cared for. Together.

From the moment a homesite is purchased, residents become part of The Ramble’s long-standing commitment to giving back. The Ramble Charitable Fund allows owners to participate in a legacy of community support that has been central to its history. Funded by a portion of lot and home sales, the endowment provides an ongoing resource for local organizations serving Asheville.

While the Charitable Fund provides a lasting foundation, the commitment to giving back continues well beyond the initial purchase. Residents have created additional opportunities for involvement through the External Relations Committee, a group focused on building meaningful partnerships and supporting organizations throughout the Asheville area.

Stewardship is a core belief at The Ramble—one that connects the neighborhood to the greater community and ensures that this commitment to generosity remains active and consistent over time.

The Ramble Charitable Fund

When The Ramble Biltmore Forest was first envisioned, giving back was not an afterthought; it was built into the community’s foundation. A portion of lot and home sale proceeds support The Ramble Charitable Fund, which was created to improve quality of life in Western North Carolina. Ongoing purchases continue to support the fund’s endowment, ensuring that each new chapter in the community makes an enduring contribution to the region.

Administered by the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, the fund awards grants twice each year to tax-exempt and government entities serving South Buncombe County. Its focus areas include education, economic development, health care, arts and culture, and the environment.

Since 2008, more than $500,000 has been distributed to local organizations and initiatives. Grants have supported programs such as:

Each site purchase at The Ramble contributes to this fund. In this way, stewardship becomes part of the foundation of the community itself—an ongoing investment in Asheville’s social and cultural vitality.

Resident-Led Impact: The External Relations Committee

In late 2022, a group of residents came together around a simple idea: how can we do more, together? With this goal in mind, they created the External Relations Committee, a group initiative designed to expand direct community engagement. While the Charitable Fund provides structured, long-term support, this committee offers another way to give back—through hands-on resident involvement.

Using existing community connections, the group began a partnership with Habitat for Humanity Asheville. The organization was selected for its established record of impact and role in expanding access to homeownership in the region. Many Ramble residents were already supporters, and in June 2023, a group of donors developed a shared goal: to sponsor a home.

Since then, residents have sponsored a Habitat home each year.

For many involved, participation extends beyond financial contributions. It includes volunteer hours, professional expertise, and long-term commitment. The Habitat homes they sponsor represent the most affordable entry-level homeownership opportunities in the Asheville area, creating stability for families and strengthening the broader community.

A Broader View of Sustainable Living

In Asheville, conversations about sustainable living often center on environmental practices and land stewardship in North Carolina. At The Ramble Biltmore Forest, that environmental commitment remains foundational. Yet sustainability is also understood in social terms: a community endures when it invests in people—ensuring families have access to housing, children are supported in school, and creativity, health, and opportunity remain within reach.

The legacy of stewardship here begins when a homesite is purchased. Through The Ramble Charitable Fund, the proceeds support organizations working across South Buncombe County. Resident-led initiatives like the External Relations Committee continue that work in personal, collaborative ways. Existing residents can become more involved through ongoing opportunities to volunteer and engage directly with community partners.

For those considering The Ramble Biltmore Forest, this broader view of stewardship is part of the neighborhood’s story. It reflects a community that sees itself not as separate from Asheville, but as connected to it, recognizing that the strength of one contributes to the well-being of the other.

Stewardship here is not a single act. It’s something that grows over time—through shared effort, quiet generosity, and a belief that caring for this place also means caring for the people beyond it.

From the ground up, it’s part of what makes The Ramble not just a place to live, but a place to belong.
