Designing for the Land: Asheville Custom Home Builders in The Ramble

In a community as storied as The Ramble, it is only fitting that homes reflect the natural beauty of the land. From forested settings to sweeping mountain views, each homesite tells its own story and holds a unique piece of history. This diversity is echoed in the remarkable residences that shape the neighborhood. Yet the beauty of these homes is not defined by architecture alone—it comes from the intentionality of experienced home builders who design in harmony with the land. Homes are designed to inspire, with architecture that frames the landscape and interiors that celebrate artistry. Here, every design is born from a partnership between the vision of the architect, the skill of the builder, and the voice of the land. The result is a work of art shaped not only for the land, but with it.

Our Featured Builders

In The Ramble, architecture is more than form—it is a response to the land itself. Building styles vary as widely as the terrain, creating a community of truly inspiring homes. From modern masterpieces to forest-inspired lodges, each residence is carefully designed for its lot, honoring topography, natural light, and forest settings so that residents feel fully immersed in nature.

To achieve this union of land and home, The Ramble offers a comprehensive Featured Builder program. This program connects homeowners with a curated team of expert builders and their master architects, specialists in crafting residences that feel both elevated and deeply rooted in their surroundings. The program features ten trusted custom builders in Asheville, each with more than fifteen years of experience creating luxury homes. Among them are respected names such as Dillard-Jones Builders, Jade Mountain Builders, and Morgan-Keefe Builders—firms known for bringing dream homes to life.

These builders share a deep respect for preserving the land, viewing it as a privilege to design alongside nature’s beauty. When asked about building in The Ramble, Max Morgan of Morgan-Keefe Builders emphasized this notion.

“When we are fortunate enough to work with a homesite that offers natural beauty and an ideal community setting, it sets the stage for an extraordinary home.”

Concept Home For Tea House Ridge

The results of this philosophy are evident in MHK Architecture and Morgan-Keefe Builders’ concept home for Lot 901 on Tea House Ridge, one of The Ramble’s newest and most exclusive phases of homesites. Designed to capture sweeping views, provide privacy, and convey undeniable grandeur, the home responds directly to its setting. Lot 901’s elongated shape and moderate slope inspired a design that stretches gracefully across the property.

“Shaped by the terrain, we designed the home with a low, graceful profile—nestled into the hillside rather than towering above it,” shared Max Morgan. “This not only allows us to maximize square footage while minimizing land disturbance but also helps us keep the home’s height in check, maintaining the natural character of Tea House Ridge.”

The foundation of any project starts with the land, says MHK Architecture’s Jeremy Driskell. For Lot 901, topography, sun orientation, and existing vegetation were carefully considered, resulting in a custom legacy home that fully realizes the potential of the natural landscape. “This allows the linear shape of the home to conform with the shape of the site, while also maximizing views and ease of access from the road,” explains Driskell. The concept design envisions a modern mountain dwelling inspired by the historic lodges of America’s national parks. Stone, copper, and other earthen elements are paired with expansive glass, connecting the interior to the surrounding landscape. Gathering spaces anchor the center of the lot, while the layout extends naturally along the property’s contours.

From a recreation room that opens to a pool deck and summer kitchen to a guest house and gym annex, every luxury is carefully considered. The open great room provides the ideal setting for entertaining, complete with a hidden scullery for prep and cleanup. The entryway is both alluring and intentional, with a modern porte-cochère crowned with a living roof, a stone motor court, and an observation deck linked by a bridge inviting guests through the stately front door.

A stunning 10-foot waterfall spanning the upper and lower levels anchors the home to its natural environment. Paying tribute to the cascades of Western North Carolina, water spills from the edge of the motor court into a quiet moat below. On the lower level, accordion doors open onto a stone patio at the base of the falls, where the sound of rushing water creates an immersive experience. “All of this comes with complete privacy,” says Driskell. “That was our goal, to maximize the site’s potential with a unique design.”

Each home in The Ramble speaks to the value of building with the land, not just on it. When a home is designed in harmony with the land’s features, it becomes a reflection of the landscape itself. The Ramble’s Featured Builder program connects homeowners with distinguished builders and architect partners who bring true expertise in designing Asheville luxury homes—residences rooted in the landscape, yet elevated by design.
